In the promotion of child health, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the official use of the new child growth curve as Taiwan’s infant and child growth standard reference since May 18th, 2009. The new child growth curve is adapted from the global 0 to 5-age children growth curve of the World Health Organization. The curve was derived from inter-national cooperated survey that studies the growth of infant and children under healthy, breast-feeding environments. Therefore, through the curve, we would be able to prevent breast-fed babies been mistaken for being under-weight.

From here, in order for parents and health professionals to fully grasp the growth conditions of a child, the growth curve has been extended from children of 0-5 years of age to 7. The growth curve between children of 5-7 years is largely based on the 2010 research study published by Professor of Pediatrics, Mei-Hwei Chang, MD, of the National Taiwan University Hospital, and Professor of Pediatrics, Walter Chen, MD, of the China Medical University. The research is based on the WHO growth curve of children 0-5 years and 7-18 years old standard curve trends, to statistically derive the reference value for children 5-7 years of age.
